Description

Award-winning saxophonist, composer, poet, MC, and producer Soweto Kinch is joined by dancers and leading jazz musicians to present The Black Peril.

A politically and racially-engaged production, the show’s historical inspiration can be traced to the episodes of civil unrest in 1919 that erupted across the western world one year on from the Armistice Declaration. What should have been a moment of triumph and social cohesion disintegrated into violent disorder and racial conflict: from Liverpool, Glasgow, Cardiff and South Shields to Jamaica and the ‘Red Summer’ across the US, city streets were set ablaze by race riots.

The production is a reflection on this history as well as a celebration of 100 years of the ‘black music’ which followed.
